Limestone (Major Industrial Mineral)
Tamil Nadu is one of India’s leading producers of limestone, driven directly by its highly concentrated cement manufacturing hubs (like Ariyalur, Trichy, and Thoothukudi).
- Total Registered Leases: There are approximately 316 active lessees mining limestone across the state.
- Total Lease Area: Covers roughly 6,697 hectares of land.
- Annual Production Volume: Tamil Nadu produces roughly 23.32 million Metric Tonnes (MT) of limestone annually.
- Estimated Reserves: The state holds an estimated reserve of 670 million Tonnes of non-crystalline (fossiliferous) limestone, positioning it closely behind major hubs like Rajasthan and Gujarat.
- Active Mines: According to the Indian Bureau of Mines, Tamil Nadu operates around 222 operational mines reporting Mineral Conservation and Development Rules (MCDR) returns, a large portion of which are dedicated to limestone.
Quarries & Rough Stone (Minor Minerals)
Quarrying in Tamil Nadu predominantly focuses on blue metal, rough stone, gravel, and granite, which form the bedrock of local construction.
- Rough Stone Production: The state produces about 29.92 million cubic meters ($\text{m}^3$) of rough stone annually.
- Earth, Gravel, & Savudu: Accounts for roughly 8.33 million cubic meters ($\text{m}^3$) per year.
- Granite Quarrying: There are over 870 granted leases for granite quarrying (both colored and black granite), spanning an area of more than 3,092 hectares.
- Revenue & Monitoring: The state enforces strict oversight on minor mineral transport. In typical operational years, enforcement leads to the seizure of over 13,000 to 16,000 vehicles annually for transporting quarry materials without valid transit passes, generating substantial penalty revenues (frequently exceeding ₹45+ Crores) to combat illegal mining.
Manufactured Sand (M-Sand)
M-Sand has effectively replaced traditional river sand across Tamil Nadu due to strict environmental bans on extracting sand from river beds like the Palar, Cauvery, and Vaigai.
- The Demand Gap: Historically, Tamil Nadu’s construction industry required roughly 5,500 to 6,000 truckloads of sand per day (with unofficial industry estimates during peak booms stretching much higher).
- Market Share: Today, M-Sand and P-Sand (Plastering Sand) fulfill nearly 80% to 90% of the fine aggregate demand in urban construction centers like Chennai, Coimbatore, and Madurai.
- Production Process: The material is produced using Vertical Shaft Impactor (VSI) technology to crush hard granite stones into cubical particles, completely bypassing the reliance on alluvial river bank deposits.
